I'm not aware of a blog post with this title. 6) What is the difference between a clause and a sentence? A sentence is able to stand alone while a clause cannot. A sentence has a subject and verb while a clause only has a subject. For example: "The woman was listening to music." This one can be written as two sentences, "The woman listened to music," and "The woman was listening to music." However, this one could not be written as two clauses because there is no verb in the second part: The woman who likes blue roses. The problem is that the word "likes" doesn't tell us what she is doing or when she is doing it. 7) Explain why the following sentences are not necessarily true: The dog died. The dog was dead. The dog will die in an accident tonight. The dog has died and the body will be in a nearby warehouse by midnight. The first one seems to be true because we know someone or something killed the dog, and we know it's dead now, so we can guess that it died at that time it was killed. However, this could mean that something happened after that made it die. For example: "The dog died when it ate the poison I had put out for the rat." The second one seems to be true because we know something happened that made the dog stop living. However, we don't know if it's just asleep, or unconscious, or if it's actually dead. For example: "The dog was dead when I found it. It had been run over by a car." The word "was" makes it seem like maybe there was some time in between when the dog was killed and when we found it. The third one is not necessarily true because we don't know for sure that the dog will die. Maybe he will be saved before he dies of that accident. The fourth one is not necessarily true because we don't know where the body will be. Maybe someone else got there first. Or maybe the dog got up and walked away. We don't know for sure that it was dead or where it died so we can't be sure that it's dead now. 8) What is the difference between “accept” and “except”? One means to agree with something, allow it to happen, receive something, take in something one would not normally take in (such as a strange person), take into account (such as an exception or an irregularity) or except (to leave out). 9) What is the difference between “as far as” and “as far as I know”? One means to tell the truth and one means to be in the position of betraying that truth. 10) What is the difference between "Every Tuesday, we do paperwork for all developments in New York City" and "every Tuesday, we do paperwork for all developments in New York City"? The introduction of a place (in this case, New York City) makes it possible to add facts not mentioned yet (it makes it necessary for them to be repeated).
